Recovery Through Faith

The Most Undervalued Gifts

“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:2

When a small child opens up that special gift on Christmas morning, his eyes light up like the lights on the tree. “Wow! Are you serious??? I can’t believe this! This is the greatest day of my life!” And for the next several days, he’s all about this gift. He’ll take it outside and show it to his buddies in the neighborhood, and he’ll enjoy being the most popular kid around for a bit.

But over the next week or two, things begin to change. His excitement starts to fade and soon it’ll be just another useless item taking up space in the bottom of his bedroom closet. Then one day, his father will ask him, “Where’s that toy you were all excited about at Christmas? Are you tired of it already?” And so it goes…

As parents, we can quickly pick up on that unappreciative attitude in our kids. Today’s happiness becomes tomorrow’s clutter. But how often do we fail to recognize that same attitude in ourselves most days?

As Paul began his letter to the believers in Philippi, he greeted them with an encouraging reminder. “You have been given two priceless gifts from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ who lives in you: His undeserving favor, and deep contentment and security! So rejoice, brothers and sisters! You have God’s presence in your lives daily! These are not new gifts, but gifts that you already have in your possession because of your faith and trust in Christ! So don’t forget to use and enjoy them!

As undeserving believers, do we truly value our Father’s favor? Do we forget all about the peace and security He has given us? This priceless knowledge that despite whatever situation or circumstance we’re dealing with in life – God is working it all out for our own good?

Paul’s reminder to the church in Philippi is one we ought to remember and celebrate each and every day. We have an intimate and loving God who desires a deep and meaningful relationship with Him, just so that He can pour out his blessings and abundance on us!

These gifts have no expiration date, can be opened up and used in any and every situation, and remind us of His unending love for us. But what’s more, God wants us to share these precious gifts with our loved ones and friends in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and communities. He wants us to share these so others can learn the difference between temporary happiness and unending joy.

Today’s happiness is tomorrow’s clutter. But today’s joy is tomorrow’s treasure.
