Talk About The Things You Love

Ever notice how the things that fill our hearts most always find their way into our everyday conversations? It’s true.

Take my friend, Mark. He absolutely loves football. You know how I know that he loves football? Because that’s all he talks about. This is his favorite time of the year. He’s in at least three different NFL fantasy leagues, he’s always wearing his favorite team jerseys and baseball caps, and come Sunday afternoon? Don’t bother trying to call him. You’d stand a better chance talking to someone in the White House before he’d answer his phone. He eats, sleeps, lives and breathes football.

That brings me to today’s question: How often do we talk about Jesus ? Or what we’re reading and learning in the Bible?

Do we ever have meaningful conversations with others about what we claim fills our hearts?

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says:

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

I love how ordinary that sounds. God doesn’t tell Israel, “Hey – I want you to schedule a weekly Bible conversation with your friends.” He says, “Talk about it when you’re sitting at home. Talk about it when you’re walking in the park. Talk about it when you lie down at night. Talk about it when you get up in the morning.”

In other words, make God part of your everyday conversations, not just Sunday mornings. We talk about our families, our hobbies, our favorite sports team, what we watched on tv last night… So what does it say about us when we can talk about almost anything except the eternal hope that we have in Christ?

“Souls are often converted through Godly conversation. Simple words frequently do more good than long sermons.” – C.H. Spurgeon
