O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! – Psalm 139: 1-6
Have you ever finished a day and thought, “Nobody really knows what today was like for me”? People might know where we went, what we accomplished, or something we posted on social media. But I doubt they know anything about the thoughts we wrestled with, the prayers we whispered, the disappointments we carried with us, or the concerns that kept us awake the night before. So much of our lives can remain hidden, even to our own family members sometimes.
But Psalm 139 proclaims that there is absolutely nothing about us that is hidden from God.
Before we tell Him anything, He already knows. Before we speak a word, He understands. Before we take the next step, He sees the path ahead. David is overwhelmed by this truth… not that God knows some things about him, but that God knows everything about him, and still draws near to David.
In his wonderful book, Knowing God, J. I. Packer observes:
“Living becomes an awesome business when you realize that you spend every moment of your life in the sight and company of an omniscient, omnipresent Creator.”
“An awesome business” is the perfect description. And that can be “awesome” as in terrifying, or that can be “awesome” as in an unbelievable privilege that we can take enormous comfort in. Ultimately that will depend on whether we know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Do you ever spend some time throughout the week wondering about the power and majesty of God? Or do you find just even the mere thought of those things too incomprehensible?
I would encourage you to get into the habit of doing that. And talk to God as you’re thinking about Him. Never be afraid to ask Him for wisdom so that you might know Him better.
Also, something that has been an enormous help to me (aside from reading His holy Word) is the book that I mentioned by J. I. Packer, Knowing God. If you’ve never read that, I highly recommend it. It’s not a hard read, as the title might otherwise suggest.
I have personally found that the more I get to know God, the more I want to know Him better.
