The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7
Paul reminded Timothy that he had everything he needed to face his fears and faithfully follow God’s calling for him. I think we need that reminder also.
I need the power of the Holy Spirit:
- To give me the courage to obey God even when I’m afraid.
- To help me share my faith when I’m nervous about what others might think.
- To give me strength to keep going when I feel tired, discouraged, or ready to quit.
- To help me forgive those who have hurt me deeply.
- To give me wisdom to make godly decisions when I’m unsure of what to do.
- To resist temptation when my willpower isn’t enough.
- To give me peace in situations that would normally overwhelm me with anxiety.
- To enable me to love difficult people through patience and kindness.
- To help me serve others with humility instead of seeking recognition.
- To give me confidence to trust God in circumstances beyond my control.
Left to my own abilities, fear and self-centeredness would certainly have a negative impact on every aspect of my life. But Paul says “the Spirit God gave us doesn’t make us timid.” Nor does it make us overly confident. Rather, it gives us a quiet confidence and a peace that we cannot muster on our own.
I once heard a preacher say, “Son, the Lord factored in all of your stupidity long before He called you.” All joking aside, I find great comfort in knowing that God has given me everything I need to do His will today.
“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from upon high.”
– Jesus, to His disciples, in Luke 24:49
