“Remember Lot’s Wife!” – Luke 17:32
It’s a short verse, but it sure says a lot. And we would be wise to take heed. Here Jesus is speaking about the end. Not the end of a city or a nation, but the end of the age itself! The day is coming when every business transaction, every vacation plan, every promotion, every earthly ambition, every possession, every political struggle, every headline, and every human achievement will suddenly be interrupted by the appearing of the Son of Man. Think about that. In the blink of an eye, the things that seem so important will be exposed for what they truly are… temporary, fragile, and passing away.
And as our Lord describes that day in Luke 17, He pauses long enough to issue a dire warning that needs no further explanation:
Remember Lot’s Wife!
Remember how she wasn’t living carelessly as judgment fell on Sodom. She’d been warned! She was among those fleeing to safety! She was experiencing the mercy of God, and she was within sight of deliverance! But her heart remained in Sodom. That’s where her treasure was, her memories, her affections…
Jesus says to every disciple, “Remember her.” Remember how close a person can be to salvation and yet consumed by their love for a passing world. Remember how easily earthly things can take hold of your heart. Remember how dangerous it is to profess faith in Christ while remaining deeply attached to things that are perishing and have no eternal value.
Remember Lot’s wife!
On that day…
No one will regret serving Christ too zealously.
No one will regret spending too much time in prayer.
No one will regret every sacrifice they made serving the Lord.
No one will regret all of the suffering they endured because of their faith.
No one will regret holding loosely the things of this life.
Loved one, don’t get comfortable and settle down in a world that is under God’s judgment.
Remember Lot’s wife!
