Develop the habit of having such a relationship to God that you do good without knowing it. – Oswald Chambers
I enjoy doing good things. You probably do too. That in some small way I’ve helped someone who wasn’t expecting it – that makes me feel good.
The real challenge for me sometimes, however, is remaining anonymous about it. Especially if the “good” I’ve done involved a significant sacrifice on my part. It seems like I’m just wired to want to be noticed, to be recognized.
When I read Matthew 6:3-4, I keep hearing Jesus say to me, Don’t go bragging about your good deeds. My Father sees them and that should be all the recognition you want. There are a lot of good things He does for you that you don’t acknowledge – are you greater than He? Stop trading the blessings of God for the applause of men!
I really need to meditate on Oswald Chambers’ quote above. I truly want that kind of relationship with God – my every word and deed being done for His glory and not mine – for that to become just as natural as breathing.
I have never once confused breathing with performing!
