“Those of us who have come to make regular use of prayer would no more do without it than we would refuse air, food, or sunshine. And for the same reason. When we refuse air, light, or food, the body suffers. And when we turn away from meditation and prayer, we deprive our minds, our emotions, and our intuitions of vitally needed support.” ~ 12 Steps and 12 Traditions, Alcoholics Anonymous
It used to be that the only time I prayed was when I couldn’t see myself out of a difficult situation that I’d gotten myself into. But as the days of my sobriety turned into weeks and months, I began to appreciate the sense of peace that came with asking my Higher Power for His help and guidance and turning whatever challenge I was dealing with over to Him.
It’s been several years since I had my last drink, yet here I am today – still praying. The difference? My prayers today no longer revolve exclusively around the occasional challenging situations in life that I have very little control over. Yes, I have found through this undeserving gift of sobriety a sense of gratitude that encourages me to include God’s help in all aspects of my life today and not just those moments of uncertainty from time to time. If God can help me stay sober one day at a time no matter what, He can help me do other things as well. He can help me become available to others, to encourage and serve them in whatever ways I can.
As I grow in my recovery, the gift of sobriety that God provides me on a daily basis becomes the foundation upon which a fruitful and productive life can be built going forward. This precious gift isn’t just a gift to me; it is also a blessing to my family, friends, and the other communities and fellowships that I’m actively a part of.
If I am truly grateful for this gift that He alone can only provide, I will make time each day, perhaps even several times each day, to express my gratitude to Him by continuing to pray for His direction in my life.
I have found that through turning my life and will over to God each and every day through prayer and meditation – I have tapped into the greatest Power known to mankind.
Today’s prayer:
God, thank you for my sobriety today. Thank you for surrounding me with people who encourage and uplift me every day, and thank you for the opportunities you provide for me to extend your kindness and love to others through service. I simply ask that you continue helping me grow in your grace and mercy as I live my life according to your will. Amen.
