He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? – Romans 8:32
When I read Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome, it’s like standing before a buffet with all of my favorite foods. It’s so hard to choose one of his passages over the others! But today, I want to feast on Romans 8:32 for a moment.
Because, isn’t it hard sometimes to trust that God’s really going to take care of us? We can believe in Him, love Him, even follow Him – and still have those quiet thoughts in the back of our mind: Is He really going to come through? Does He actually see what I need?
Paul gives us the answer: “Look at what God has already done.”
God didn’t spare His own Son. He didn’t hold on to Jesus – He gave Him up. For us. And He didn’t wait for us to get our acts together… He did so right in the middle of our brokenness.
Paul’s basically asking, “If God has already done that… what would He possibly hold back now?”
But isn’t it true that we often tend to live like God is reluctant? Like He has to be convinced? Like He might change His mind about us depending on how things are going? Well, this verse pushes against that way of thinking.
God’s not tight-fisted, He’s already been overwhelmingly generous to us!
Does that mean life suddenly becomes easy, or that we get everything we want? Of course not. But it does mean that we’re not dealing with a God who’s hesitant about us. We’re dealing with a God who’s already given His absolute best for us.
So when we’re anxious about provision, or direction, or what’s coming next – let’s come back to this wonderful truth in Romans 8:32.
God has already proven His heart for us!
