Encouragement For the Weary, Clumsy Traveler

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. – Psalm 37:23-24

These verses remind me of that night in the Upper Room when Jesus prayed what we call “The High Priestly Prayer.” Hours before His arrest, Jesus prayed for His disciples, saying, “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.” Then He added, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” (John 17)

What a moment! Jesus knew what was coming – for Him and for them. Yet His heart was focused on their protection, their faith, and their future. And then He turned His attention beyond that room – beyond those walls and beyond the coming centuries – and prayed for all who would one day believe in Him through their message. That means us! You and me!

So when I read those verses in Psalm 37, I see Jesus’ prayer in it. The Lord makes firm our steps… not because we’re surefooted and flawless, but because He is faithful. He knew we’d stumble. He knew we’d face temptation, confusion, fear, and failure. But He also knew that we would be held up despite all that. “Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

That’s what Jesus was doing that night – securing our steps in advance. And even now, He intercedes for us, lifting us up when we lose balance, steadying us when the world shakes beneath our feet.

We might not always walk perfectly, but we never walk alone.
