If You’re Not Reading Your Bible, How Do You Know What’s True?

Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. – John 17:17

Truth is under attack. Always has been. Satan’s not subtle about it – well, he is subtle, actually. He doesn’t just come out and lie; he twists the truth, mixes in half-truths with lies, and makes it all sound reasonable. Jesus called him “the father of lies” (John 8:44), and he’s still at it today.

The world isn’t just rejecting truth anymore – they’re trying to redefine it. Isaiah 5:20 said it long ago: people will call evil good and good evil. Look around today. What God calls sin, the world calls “authentic.” What God calls holy, the world calls “intolerance.” We see it everywhere.

That’s why reading your Bible isn’t enough. You’ve got to study it, think about it, meditate on it, and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what’s true. That’s what Paul was basically saying in 1 Corinthians 2:10-14. Otherwise, you’ll end up believing whatever garbage the culture puts out and compromise your standing before God. Ephesians 4:14 warns us not to be “tossed here and there by every wind of teaching..”

Satan knows Scripture better than most professing Christians. He quoted it to Jesus in the wilderness, but distorted and twisted it (Matthew 4:6). He’s still doing it today with half-truths, lies, deception. And the culture is doing his footwork, spreading lies as though they’re gospel. Think about it. You can’t always control what your kids are learning in school. Heck, these days parents have all but lost their right to know what their children are being exposed to. And they’re trusting and impressionable. So if they hear lies early on, they’ll grow up thinking the lies are truth and the truth are lies.

We can’t let that happen. God expects us to know the truth. He gave us His Word, plain and simple (2 Timothy 3:16, Psalm 119:160). It’s our guide, our anchor. The world will try to convince you otherwise, but if you soak in God’s Word, let it shape your thinking and your heart, you won’t be moved when everything around you is falling apart.

Truth matters. God’s Word is truth. Stand on it. Because if you don’t, the world and the devil will gladly tell you their version – and it will cost you.

Buy the truth and do not sell it—
wisdom, instruction and insight as well.
