The Humanist lives as if this world were all and enough. He is not otherworldly. He holds that the time spent on the contemplation of a possible afterlife is time wasted. He fears no hell and seeks no heaven, save that which he and others created on earth. He willingly accepts the world that exists on this side of the grave as the place for moral struggle and creative living. He seeks the life abundant for his neighbor as for himself. He is content to live one world at a time and let the next life-if such there may be-take care of itself. He need not deny immortality; he simply is not interested. His interests are here. – Edwin H. Wilson, “The Humanist Manifesto”
One of the most deceptive ideologies infecting modern society today is secular humanism – the belief that man is the ultimate authority, that truth is determined by human reason, and that the solutions to mankind’s greatest problems lie within mankind himself.
This isn’t a new error. It’s as old as sin itself. In Genesis 11:4, mankind said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves..”
This was open rebellion. It was a united act of human arrogance – an attempt to dethrone God and establish man as sovereign. And that is precisely what secular humanism is: the glorification of man and the dismissal of God.
Today, secular humanism dominates every major institution. Two prominent examples are the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) – modern-day embodiments of the spirit of Babel.
The WHO: Human Health Without the Creator
The WHO postures itself as the global authority on human health, yet it is aggressively secular and morally bankrupt. Its definition of health includes abortion on demand, gender fluidity, and euthanasia – all in the name of “human rights.” But these so-called rights are nothing more than rebellion codified into policy. And sadly, the United States contributes over $1 billion each year to this maligned institution.
There is no fear of God before their eyes (Romans 3:18). No acknowledgment that man is made in the image of God. No recognition of sin. No room for biblical morality. Just an unrelenting drive to redefine life, gender, marriage, and death according to the shifting standards of human depravity.
The UN: Globalism Without God
The United Nations speaks often of peace, justice, and human dignity, but it does so from a perverse God-rejecting framework. It calls on nations to unite… not under God, but under man’s leadership, man’s values, and man’s goals.
The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is essentially a blueprint for a utopian society without any reference whatsoever to divine truth. It is Babel on a global scale – a coordinated effort to bring heaven down to earth while ignoring the King of Heaven altogether. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the American taxpayers are required to foot the $1 billion tab to the WHO, they’re forced to pony up nearly $13 billion annually to the United Nations.
This is what Romans 1 tells us:
“Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools” (v.22). “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised” (v.25).
Make no mistake, secular humanism is not benign. It is an all-out assault on the authority of God. It denies the Creator, exalts the creature, and seeks to establish a world where man is answerable to no one but himself.
It redefines morality. It silences the truth. It undermines the family, the church, and even the sanctity of life itself. It rejects the exclusivity of Christ and the sufficiency of Scripture. It is not merely misguided – it is wicked!
Yet in the midst of this rebellion, God remains patient. Just as He disrupted Babel in mercy – to prevent mankind from plunging headlong into destruction – He still restrains evil today. But His patience will not last forever.
There is only one true remedy for the world’s condition, and it is not more global cooperation or humanitarian effort. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which calls sinners to repent, believe, and bow before the Lordship of Christ.
The world doesn’t need more towers of human achievement. It needs the Cross – where God humbled the pride of man and provided the only way of salvation.
