Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6
Many today don’t want to think about God, about eternity, about heaven and hell. For to think about such things inevitably leads to some very uncomfortable questions, of which require even more uncomfortable answers. No, it’s much more pleasant for the man who doesn’t know Christ to ignore such thoughts completely and instead remain happily distracted with matters of far less importance.
He may well be a very good man in the community, in good standing with both his neighbors and his social endeavors. He may even attend church on occasion to keep up appearances. And he may might be the very sort that gives generously to the overlooked and underprivileged.
He may, in fact, seem more “Christianly” than most Christians themselves.
But the uncomfortable truth never escapes him, for his mind can stay occupied for only so long. Thankfully however another distraction comes along. Another project, another trivial pursuit to keep him pleasantly amused.
Yet, despite all his good deeds and distractions, the man who avoids thoughts of God remains tethered to a fleeting world, chasing shadows that cannot satisfy the soul’s deepest longing. The uncomfortable truth persists: life is brief, and eternity looms ever closer. No amount of charity, social standing, or momentary pleasures can bridge the chasm between a man and his Creator. Only in turning to Christ, confronting those difficult questions, and seeking His grace can true peace and purpose be found.
For while the world offers endless diversions, only Jesus offers eternal life.
