What if We Considered Our Suffering a Privilege?

You have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. – Philippians 1:29

Have you ever considered that trusting God and suffering for Christ can go hand in hand? This question challenges us to look beyond our pain and see God’s purpose in it. As I reflect on Paul’s statement above, I’m reminded that our trials are not a sign of God’s absence but a sacred opportunity to draw closer to Him.

When I think about the Philippians, I see a people enduring hardship, much like their beloved apostle Paul, who was imprisoned when he wrote this letter. They might have been tempted to fear that God had abandoned them. But Paul reassures them, and us, that suffering for Christ is a gift, not a punishment. It’s a tool in God’s hands, shaping and refining us, drawing us into deeper trust. I’ve learned in my own faith journey that God never wastes our pain… He uses it to strengthen our faith and make us more like His Son.

The Greek word for “suffer” here, pasko, often points to persecution, but it also includes physical, emotional, or spiritual suffering. I know a dear brother in Christ who battles a debilitating condition that makes walking painful and difficult. Another friend struggles financially, despite her faithfulness, wondering how she’ll make ends meet. And then there’s the suffering we all face when resisting temptation – a battle Jesus Himself endured during His 40 days in the wilderness, where He was so spent that angels came to minister to Him (Matthew 4:11). These sufferings, though different, share a common thread: they test our trust in God.

Not all suffering looks the same, but as followers of Christ we have a unique privilege. We can trust Him to carry us through every discomfort, grief, or pain – whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual. Even more, we have the honor of glorifying Him in our trials. Jesus’ suffering on the cross reconciled us to the Father, and our suffering, when offered to Him, becomes a testimony of His sustaining grace.

So, my friend, if you’re in a season of suffering, don’t lose heart. Trust that God is with you, using your trial for His purpose. Lean into Him, and let your life reflect the hope and strength that come from knowing Christ. Your suffering is not the end of the story… it’s a chapter God is writing to draw you closer to His heart.

Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for the privilege of trusting You, even in suffering. Help me to see my trials as tools in Your loving hands. Give me strength to honor You through every struggle, knowing You are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
