Living in The Shadow of Regret

Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you. O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. – Psalm 86:4-5

Here’s an honest confession: Sometimes I have the unfortunate tendency to respond without taking a moment to think things through. I was reminded of this a few months ago, as I was having a spirited conversation with someone who made a remark that I vehemently disagreed with. Then and there I decided to unload both barrels on him. And it happened so fast, almost like it came from out of nowhere. And the worst part is that I let him walk away without apologizing. I’ve not seen or heard from the guy since. And all because of my pride, my need to be right.

Regret weighs heavy, doesn’t it? It often stems from a moment like the one I just had a few months ago… a moment we wish we could take back; a hasty decision, a harsh word, or possibly a missed chance to do good. Perhaps you had an opportunity to do something that would honor God and help someone in the process, but you faltered. Now, the sting of that failure lingers, and the consequences feel like a constant reminder.

But here’s the truth: we don’t have to stay trapped in that cycle of regret. The psalmist reminds us of a God who is good, ready to forgive, and overflowing with steadfast love for those who turn to Him. When we bring our mistakes to Jesus, He doesn’t turn us away. Instead, He invites us to lay down our guilt and shame at His feet, seeking His forgiveness and grace.

God may guide us to take steps to make things right by making amends, offering an apology, or extending forgiveness to someone who has hurt us. If He does, follow His lead without hesitation. But once we’ve done what He’s asks, we need to let go. We shouldn’t keep punishing ourselves for something God has already forgiven. His mercy is bigger than our mistakes!

Yes, some consequences may linger, but God doesn’t want us to carry the burden of unresolved guilt and live in the shadow of regret. Let us lift our eyes to Him, seek His face, and trust in His unfailing love. In His presence, we can find freedom, peace, and the strength to move forward without looking back.

Prayer: Lord, I bring my regrets to You, trusting in Your goodness and readiness to forgive. Wash away my guilt and shame, and show me how to make things right where I can. Help me to release what You’ve forgiven and to walk in the freedom of Your love. Thank you for Your mercy that sets me free. Amen.
