Tent Living

So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the body of this earthly tent, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. – 2 Peter 1:12-15

The Apostle Peter penned these words to first-century Christians driven from Jerusalem by fierce persecution. Forced to flee, they faced uncertainty and hardship for their faith. Yet Peter, their faithful shepherd, does not focus on their suffering but on the truth that sustains them. He acknowledges their firm faith but insists on reminding them of the gospel’s hope. Why? Because even mature believers need constant encouragement to keep their eyes on eternity.

Peter describes his body as a “tent” – a temporary shelter, not a permanent home. This vivid imagery reminds us that our earthly life, with all its trials and hardships, is fleeting. Peter knew his own time was short; Jesus had foretold his own martyrdom (John 21:18-19). Facing his imminent death, Peter’s urgency is clear: he wants these believers to remain steadfast long after he’s gone. Their present struggles, though painful and very real, pale in comparison to the eternal glory awaiting them in Christ.

For us today, Peter’s words are a call to perspective. Our persecution, hardship, or daily pressures may not exactly resemble those of the first-century believers, but they have the potential nonetheless to shift our focus from things above to our temporary circumstances in this life. Our true home is with Christ, where an imperishable inheritance awaits (1 Peter 1:14). By keeping his hope in view, we find strength to endure and courage to share the gospel, no matter the cost.

Beloved, are you weighed down by challenges in this life? Remember that you’re living in a tent…. this world is not your home! Let the promise of eternal life with Christ anchor your soul. Like Peter, make it your mission to remind others of this truth, strengthening the church to stand firm in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
