They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” – John 9:26
When the topic was about Jesus, nothing good came out of the mouths of the Pharisees. But despite their flawed, self-righteous religiosity, they were the authors of two of the most wonderfully profound questions that would ever be asked of a follower of Christ: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” (John 9:26 ESV).
Oh, dear soul, pause with me and let these questions pierce your heart as they pierced the blind man’s. The Pharisees, blind in their own pride, hurled these words as accusations, yet they echo through the ages as divine invitations. They are questions that demand a testimony, questions that beg you to recount the moment Jesus touched you, changed you, and opened your eyes to see Him as the Savior He is.
What did he do to you? Can you hear it? It’s not just a question – it’s a summons to remember! What has Jesus done for you, beloved? Has He not taken the darkness of your sin-soaked soul and flooded it with the light of His mercy? Has He not lifted you from the pit of despair, from the chains of guilt, and set your feet on the rock of His grace? For the man born blind, Jesus did the impossible… He gave sight where there once was only darkness. And for you, has He not done the same? Perhaps your eyes were blind to His glory, your heart numb to His love, until He stooped down, touched you, and whispered, “See.” Oh, recount it! Let your heart swell with the memory of His touch. He has done all things well – He has done everything for you.
How did he open your eyes? It’s not just what Jesus did, but how He worked His miracle in you. The blind man could only say, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see” (John 9:15). For you, the how may be a story of quiet whispers in the night, a sermon that broke your heart, a loss that drove you to Him, or a joy that revealed His face. The how is the story of His sovereign, tender hand crafting your salvation, moment by moment, trial by trial, grace upon grace. It’s the mystery of His Spirit moving, unseen yet undeniable, until the scales fell from your eyes and you beheld the precious Lamb of God!
Oh, dear Christian, these questions are not just for the blind man. They are for you, for me, for every soul redeemed by the blood of Christ. The Pharisees asked in scorn, but God uses their words, still today, to stir our worship! What has Jesus done for you? How has He opened your eyes? Don’t let these questions pass you by. Let them grip you. Let them drive you to your knees in gratitude, to your feet in proclamation! Your story of His work in you is a spark of eternity, a testimony that glorifies the One who said, “I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
Today, think about the Pharisees’ questions, and answer them with every ounce of life within you. Tell the world what Jesus has done for you. Proclaim how He opened your eyes. Let your heart burn with this undeniable truth: the God who gave sight to the blind is the God who sees you, loves you, and will never let you go. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Today’s Prayer: O Jesus, Light of the World, I am undone by what You have done for me. You have opened my eyes to see Your glory, Your grace, Your beauty. How can I ever thank You enough? Stir my heart, Lord, so that I will remember Your works, to proclaim Your deeds, and to live with this precious sight You have given me. May my life be a living answer to the question, “What did He do to you?” All glory be to You, my Savior and my God. Amen.
