An Honest Prayer

Today I learned that a young boy from our community recently underwent a biopsy procedure for what his doctor presumes to be a cancerous tumor in his lung. During that procedure something went terribly wrong, leaving him in a medically-induced coma for a number of days. Thankfully he regained consciousness yesterday and is able to speak and communicate with his family. His mom and dad’s wedding anniversary was yesterday, and as soon as he awakened, he smiled and wished them a happy anniversary. I pray for that child and his family. I hope you do too. His name is Maverick. He’s a 6th grader and attends elementary school locally.

I couldn’t stop thinking about him and his family this afternoon. And it’s moments like this when I have to dig really deep to remember that no matter what – God is good, and that the righteous are rescued from trouble. But sometimes it sure doesn’t seem like it. And so, our only proper response is to pray for the Lord to strengthen our faith.

The righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and it falls on the wicked instead. – Proverbs 11:8

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like this, God. Sometimes it feels like the wicked are rescued and trouble falls on the righteous instead.

Who understands the mind of God? How He shapes and molds the events of life to suit His wants and pleasures? How He dries up the springs of life and parches the land to accomplish His purposes? Who else but God knows the heart of man so deeply and truly? The good and the bad, the best and the worst of intentions?

Let me not complain, O Lord. Show me my heart instead. Do this so that I might turn aside from my wickedness, my selfishness and vainglory. Teach me, God. Show me through the kindness and steadfastness of Your heart, that I too might be rescued from trouble.

For though I know not Your thoughts, I know the contentment of Your love. Although I don’t have many answers, I do know this: Your love is enough for me. Amen.
