Have you ever wondered if it’s okay to ask God the really hard questions – the ones that feel a little too awkward, or maybe too real?
Sometimes we treat prayer like a polite conversation, carefully guarding our words to sound faithful, composed, and “Christian enough.” But what if God actually welcomes our honest, messy, and even doubtful questions?
Throughout Scripture, we see people bringing their deepest uncertainties straight to God. Job asked, “Why did I not perish at birth?” (Job 3:11). That doesn’t exactly sound like a question from someone who’s spiritually chipper, does it? No, it sounds like it’s coming from a man in deep suffering, looking for answers.
Habakkuk opened his book with this: “How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?” (Habakkuk 1:2). That’s not just a passing thought. It’s a cry of frustration. Yet God responded. And not with punishment, but with conversation and vision.
Even Mary, when told she would give birth to the Son of God, asked plainly, “How will this be?” (Luke 1:34). She wasn’t doubting God’s power; she was simply being human.
And lest we forget Jesus Himself, on the cross, crying out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). That moment of anguish shows us that there is no question too hard, too awkward, or too honest for God.
God isn’t rattled by our wondering. He’s not disappointed when we bring Him the stuff we can’t make sense of. In fact, those very questions often become the doorway to a deeper relationship with Him.
Take a moment today to ask Him the question that’s been sitting in your heart. He’s ready to listen, and He knows the answer.
