A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.
– Isaiah 40:6-8
Through centuries of trials, be it persecution, skepticism, neglect from both in the pulpit and in the pew, critics, and shifting ideologies, doubt and disbelief – Scripture has remained steadfast. It has guided, convicted, and comforted countless hearts. As an old-timey preacher once said, “A thousand times over, the death knell of the Bible has been sounded, the funeral procession formed, the inscription cut on the tombstone, and committal read. But somehow the corpse never stays put!”
Its truth prepared the way for the coming of the Lord, as proclaimed by John the Baptist, calling people to repentance. Today, it continues to speak, inviting us to humble ourselves before the everlasting God.
When we recognize just how fragile and frail we are in light of God’s enduring word, we are drawn to repentance. Our pride, our self-reliance, our fleeting pursuits – all fade in the presence of His unchanging truth. But this is not to be a message of despair! It’s an invitation to anchor our hope to the eternal God whose promises never fail.
The grass may wither, and the flowers may fall, but the word of our God endures forever. Let that truth be your foundation, your comfort, and your call to repentance today.
