That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. – John 20:19 (NLT)
After His resurrection, Jesus could have appeared to kings, or confronted His enemies, or displayed His glory to the world. Instead, He chose to seek out His disciples – ordinary, fearful, and faltering followers – hiding behind locked doors. His first words, “Peace be with you,” fulfilled His earlier promise to them: “In me you may have peace” (John 16:33). This was no ordinary greeting; it was the Prince of Peace Himself, standing in their midst, offering the unshakable calm that only His presence could bring.
Despite their doubts and desertion, Jesus came to them. He didn’t wait for them to find Him or prove their worthiness. No, His presence was proof that He was indeed the Son of God, raised from the dead and standing before them. His love, relentless and faithful, had proved greater than the grave.
Our Lord came to His disciples – even though they had run away and lost faith – and stood right there with them, saying, “Peace be with you!” So, loved ones, why wouldn’t He come to you too, even if you feel like the most unworthy person He’s saved with His blood?
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?
“And Can it Be that I Should Gain” – Charles Wesley (1738)
