Hearing and Believing

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
– Romans 10:17

The gospel is not something we discover on our own… it must be proclaimed, received, and believed. Paul makes it clear that faith is born when people hear the message of Christ. This truth was especially relevant in his time, when most people relied on spoken words rather than written texts. But even today, in a world filled with books, screens, and endless sources of information, the power of hearing the gospel remains vital.

Think about how faith often begins. Maybe it was a sermon, a conversation with a friend or parent, or even a simple testimony that stirred something in your heart. The spoken Word has a way of reaching us in ways nothing else can. That’s why Paul reminds us in verse 15 of the beauty of those who bring the good news – because they are the instruments God uses to awaken faith in others!

This should encourage us in a couple of ways. First, if we are believers, we should not hesitate to share the gospel aloud. Whether in a personal conversation or through a public testimony, our words are important! Second, if we are seeking to deepen our faith (and we should always be striving to that end), we should intentionally put ourselves in places where we can hear the Word of God – namely through preaching, teaching, and the voices of fellow believers!

We would do well to remember Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian Eunuch, as the foreign dignitary sat in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, Philip asked the man, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?” Philip hopped into the chariot with the man and began sharing the gospel message of Christ. A short time later, that man received the gospel with joy and was baptized in a nearby river! (Acts 8: 26-38)

Loved one, faith is not built in silence. It comes through hearing, and what we hear must be the good news of Jesus Christ. Let’s see to it that we are both hearing and speaking the truth that leads to salvation!

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for the power of Your Word. Help me to be attentive to the gospel, to hear it with an open heart, and to share it boldly with others. Let my words and my life reflect the good news of Jesus Christ. Amen.
