A Good (But Dangerous) Prayer

Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

– Psalm 139:23-24

David was a man after God’s own heart, yet he knew his own heart was not always pure. He was committed to following God’s ways, but he also understood his weaknesses. He didn’t just want to avoid outward sin; he wanted God to root out anything in him that was offensive – hidden pride, secret fears, or lurking unbelief. He longed for God to reveal these things so he could repent and be led in the way of righteousness.

This is a wonderful prayer, but it is also a dangerous one. Why? Because when we genuinely ask God to search our hearts, He will. And He will show us things we may not want to see – sins we’ve ignored, attitudes we’ve excused, and compromises we’ve justified. It can be painful to face these truths, but it is necessary if we truly want to walk in God’s ways.

This is a prayer that takes courage! It’s not a casual request, nor should it be a self-righteous exercise. If we pray these words sincerely, we must be prepared to respond. When God reveals something offensive in us, will we resist His correction, or will we humble ourselves and repent? Will we allow Him to transform us, or will we cling to our own ways?

If we are willing, God will not only expose our sin but also lead us in the way everlasting. He does not reveal our faults to condemn us but to purify and guide us. His conviction is always for our good, leading us to deeper faith, greater holiness, and a closer walk with Him.

Are you ready to pray this dangerous prayer? If so, be prepared for God to answer. And when He does, trust Him enough to obey.
