A Personal Savior

While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” – Luke 8:49-50

As I read this passage this evening, the thought occurred to me that the woman with menstrual bleeding had been suffering from this condition for 12 years. Interestingly enough, Jairus’ daughter, the Bible tells us, was about 12 years old.

Jairus and the woman with the bleeding issue couldn’t have been more different. He was a man of influence; she was a nobody. He had wealth; she spent everything she had on doctors to cure her; Jairus approached Jesus publicly; the woman came in secret. Yet both found themselves at the feet of Jesus, desperate for a miracle.

What’s striking is how Jesus met their needs in such personal ways. The woman was healed instantly in front of a crowd. Jairus had to wait, and when it seemed too late, Jesus still brought life. The process was different, but the power was the same.

What a wonderful reminder this is to us that Jesus works uniquely in each of our lives. Maybe you’ve prayed for something and seen an immediate answer, or maybe you’re still waiting, wondering if it’s too late. Jairus thought delay meant defeat, but Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” That’s His word to us, too.

Trust that Jesus is at work, even when it seems delayed. His timing is perfect. His power is sure. And His care for you is deeply personal!
