For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.” – Exodus 12:19-20
God commanded the Israelites to remove all yeast from their homes during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This wasn’t merely about food – it was a symbol of removing the corruption, sin, and worldly influences that had permeated their lives. The process required intentional effort… they had to search their homes carefully, ensuring that no trace of yeast remained.
What a reminder this is for me! Purifying my heart before the Lord is never accidental, it requires His Spirit and my due diligence. Just as leaven spreads through dough, sin and worldly influences can subtly creep into my heart and mind. And if I go for a while and leave that unchecked, my stinkin’ thinkin’ returns, my priorities shift, and my devotion to God becomes weakened.
The Israelites were called to be set apart, wholly devoted to the Lord. As a Christian, so am I. Following Christ means that I should have a living awareness, through the help of the Holy Spirit of course, that recognizes anything that hinders my relationship with God and let go of it.
Purging sin isn’t just a one-time event; it’s an ongoing discipline. The Feast lasted seven days, reminding me that my walk with the Lord is a daily commitment.
