When Hope Feels Lost

“But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.”
– Luke 24:21a

You ever have those moments where your hope feels crushed? Where the thing you were so sure God was going to do just… doesn’t happen? That’s where these two disciples were on the road to Emmaus. They’d put all their hope in Jesus, believing He was the Savior, the One who’d fix everything. Then, He died. To them it looked like the story was over.

But what they didn’t realize is that Jesus was right there with them, walking alongside them, even in their confusion and doubt. He could’ve just said, “Hey, it’s me! I’m alive!” and ended their grief on the spot. But instead, He asked questions. He wanted them to wrestle with what they knew, to piece it together, and to trust – not based on what they could see – but on the truth they’d already been told.

And isn’t that what faith really is? Jesus wants to know if we’ll believe Him even when we can’t see Him. Sometimes that’s hard! Sometimes it feels like we’re fumbling and stumbling around in the dark, trying to hold onto something we can’t quite grasp. But God hasn’t left us hanging. He’s given us the testimony of those who did see, like the disciples and the women at the tomb. Their witness is solid, and it’s enough.

Friend, when doubt creeps in and life doesn’t look like we thought it would, remember this: Jesus is still here. We might not see Him the way we’d like, but He’s walking right alongside us, just like He did with those disciples heading to Emmaus.

The question is, will we trust Him anyway?
