Mining for Treasure

The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.
– Acts 8:29-31 (NLT)

Reading God’s Word can feel intimidating at times, can’t it? The Bible is a deep well of truth, and some passages may seem like they’re written in a foreign language. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t expect us to figure it all out alone. He has provided resources, people, and – most importantly – His Spirit to help us dig deeper and uncover the treasure of His Word.

One of the best tools I’ve discovered in my own journey is a good study Bible. It’s like having a guide on the trail, pointing out landmarks and explaining what might otherwise go unnoticed. Those study notes don’t just explain the context; they make connections to our lives today, helping God’s Word come alive! As one wise pastor says, “The plain things are the main things.” The heart of God’s message is always accessible, even if the details sometimes require a little help.

But the greatest resource is the One that helped the Ethiopian Eunuch – the Holy Spirit. When Philip joined him at his chariot, it wasn’t just Philip’s knowledge at work; it was God’s Spirit using Philip to bring clarity. And that same Spirit is available to us today. When we pray and invite the Holy Spirit into our Bible reading, we’re asking the Author Himself to teach us.

Sure, there will still be mysteries, things we don’t fully grasp right away. But over time, as we stay consistent in reading and asking for God’s help, the treasures of Scripture begin to unfold. We start seeing God’s heart, His character, and His plans for us.

Why not make it your goal this year to open the Bible each day, even if it’s just to read one chapter. You may find, like I often do, that one chapter leads to two or three because you’re drawn into the story of God’s love and truth. And as you read, ask the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding.

Just like the eunuch who found joy and clarity that day with Philip, you’ll find treasures beyond anything this world has to offer. God’s Word is alive and powerful, and with His help, it will completely transform you. 🙂

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving us Your Word, full of wisdom and truth. Help me to approach it with a humble heart and a desire to know You more. Holy Spirit, guide my understanding and reveal the treasure You have for me. Give me the discipline to seek You daily and the joy of discovering Your thoughts. Amen.
