What Year That Was!

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.
– Proverbs 16:3

Well… I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to stepping into a brand new year. And not because 2024 was a year to forget. It was, however, a year of dramatic change for me and my family.

My wife’s dad celebrated his 100th birthday in January, then a few weeks later her mother passed away unexpectedly. My daughter got married in April, then I spent four days in the hospital in June. My son got married in November, and a few days later my wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary. And somewhere in the middle of all that, the Lord led me and my wife to a new church in our community over the summer.

Talk about a year of change!

But you know, the Lord has walked with us every step of the way, through the highs and lows, the challenges and joys. And this reminds me of the Proverbs passage above: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

As we step into a new year, there’s something reassuring about starting with the right foundation. If there’s one thing I’ve learned through all the changes of this past year, it’s this: when we commit every part of our lives – our work, our families, our health, our decisions, and even our uncertainties – to the Lord, He provides all the stability we need.

But notice, the verse doesn’t say that committing our work to God means everything will go exactly the way we planned. Quite the opposite, actually. My wife and I didn’t plan for her mother’s passing, my hospital stay, or all the other twists and turns of this year. But we did trust God through it all, and He established something far greater than our plans: His presence, His peace, and His purpose in every situation.

So, dear Christian, as you begin this journey of the year ahead, take comfort in knowing that the Lord has already gone ahead of us into 2025! He knows what’s coming, and He’s ready to guide us through it every step of the way. Commit everything to Him, one day at a time, and trust Him with the details. πŸ™‚

Happy New Year!
