When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” – John 1: 47-50
When Nathanael met Jesus, he was skeptical. His bias against Nazareth clouded his judgment, and he could not imagine that the Messiah would come from such an unlikely place. But Jesus, instead of condemning Nathanael for his prejudice, looked deeper. He acknowledged Nathan’s honesty and revealed His divine knowledge of him: “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree” (v.48).
In that moment, Nathanael realized something profound – Jesus knew him completely. He knew his doubts, his despair, and even the longings of his heart. This revelation led Nathanael to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God, the King of Israel.
Two powerful truths emerge from this passage:
1. Jesus knows us completely! There is nothing about us that escapes His notice. He sees past the exterior – our words, actions, and masks we sometimes wear – and into the depths of our hearts. For those who feel unseen, this truth brings incredible comfort! Jesus knows your pain, your struggles, and your deepest desires. You are fully known and loved by Him!
But for those who are walking in hidden sin or self-deception, this truth serves as a sober warning. Nothing is truly hidden from God. As Jesus said in Luke 12:2, everything concealed will one day be revealed. Let this reality lead you to repentance and a closer walk with Him.
2. Salvation comes through recognizing who Jesus is. Nathanael’s transformation came when he recognized Jesus for who He truly is – the Messiah, the Son of God. This is the foundation of our faith. No one can be saved without this conviction! Jesus is not merely a good teacher or moral example; He is the Savior of the world, and only He can meet the deepest needs of our hearts and give us true purpose and direction.
So take comfort in the fact that Jesus sees and knows you completely! Bring your struggles, longings, and fears to Him in prayer today, trusting that He cares for you. If there are areas of your life you’ve been hiding, confess them to Jesus. He is faithful to forgive and transform!
Today, reflect on who Jesus is to you. Have you fully embraced Him as the Son of God and Savior? If not, seek Him today with an open heart. He is sure to find you, just as He found Philip and Nathanael!
