Stepping Out of the Boat

Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
– Matthew 14:28-31

Peter’s faith is inspiring – he trusted Jesus enough to step out of the safety of the boat. But his faith was also fragile. As long as he fixed his eyes on Jesus, he did the impossible. Yet, the moment he focused on the storm around him, fear crept in and he began to sink.

What a powerful picture of our walk with God! Life’s storms – challenges, fears, doubts – often threaten to pull us under. But the storm itself isn’t what causes us to stumble; it’s when we take our eyes off Jesus and let fear take over.

Still, notice Jesus’ response. When Peter called out for help, Jesus immediately reached out and rescued him. He didn’t scold Peter for stepping out of the boat; He gently corrected his lack of faith.

What storms are distracting you from Jesus today? Take a moment to realign your focus. Instead of dwelling on the chaos around you, fix your eyes on Jesus, who has power over the wind and waves of life. And if you feel like you’re sinking, don’t hesitate to cry out, “Lord, save me!” With an outstretched arm, He will meet you where you are.

Even when we falter, Jesus is near, ready to lift us up when we cry out to Him.
