You Can’t Out-Give God

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6-9 (NLT)

When we think of giving, it’s easy to focus on what we might lose. Giving away our time, money, or energy can sometimes feel like a great sacrifice, but God assures us that a generous heart is never left empty-handed.

In these verses above, Paul reminds us that when we sow generously, we can expect a generous harvest. The kind of giving God delights in isn’t forced or reluctant, but joyful and willing.

Materially, God promises to take care of our needs when we give from the heart. Philippians 4:19 reminds us that He supplies for us, not from a place of scarcity, but out of His infinite riches. This isn’t a get-rich promise, but a guarantee that God sees and honors our generosity. When we give, we experience His provision in ways we could never orchestrate on our own.

Spiritually, God rewards us both now and forever. Jesus Himself emphasized this in Matthew 19:29, assuring us that sacrifices made for his sake will be repaid in ways we cannot fathom. Though these rewards may not always be literal, they are always greater than what we give up. In God’s economy, you never end up with less by giving to Him; He can never be outdone in generosity!

So, let us give freely and with joy, knowing that God will meet our every need and that every act of giving is an investment in His kingdom that He never overlooks. Materially and spiritually, we can’t out-give God. We can trust Him with our generosity!
