There Will Be Trouble

I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me —the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. – Acts 20:23-24

Paul knew that hardship was part of his calling, that the road ahead would be tough. Yet he pressed onward, carrying out the mission given to him by Christ Himself. With no regard to personal comfort, personal safety, or approval from others, Paul fearlessly proclaimed the gospel wherever he went. And he did so knowing that his faith in Jesus would come at great personal cost.

There will be seasons when following Christ will bring challenges to us also, whether it’s strained relationships, a major change of plans in life, or obstacles we didn’t see coming. Paul’s example shows us that when we live with an eternal perspective, our challenges become part of a much bigger picture. But like Paul, we find strength and peace to face what’s ahead when we’re anchored in God’s purpose. We don’t have to fear hardship or uncertainty – that’s part of our calling as disciples of Christ, too. And although the Holy Spirit will not shield us from trials, He will prepare us for them and walk with us every step of the way through them.

Reflection: What is one hardship you’re facing right now that God may be using to strengthen your faith? Pray and ask for the Holy Spirit to help guide you through it.
