Do You Embrace God’s Discipline?

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
– Hebrews 12:11

Recently I began a new journey to improve my health. I’ve slowly started swapping out junk foods for more vegetables, sugary drinks for water, and instead of sleeping in or sitting behind my computer desk – I bought a gym membership and meet with a trainer a few mornings per week. But it has not been easy! And there are times when I’m very tempted to quit and go back to old eating habits and the sedentary lifestyle, especially when it seems like my efforts aren’t being rewarded like I think they should be. But deep down, I know this hard work is very much needed if I’m ever to enjoy an active, healthy life again. And I know that this is what the Lord wants for me!

God’s discipline is much the same. It often feels painful, maybe even unfair at times, as it works on our weaknesses and refines our character. We naturally want to escape discomfort and take the easiest route. But when we surrender to His discipline, something wonderful happens. Over time, God produces a harvest of righteousness and peace within us! Our spiritual “muscles” strengthen, and our faith deepens. We become more like Christ, displaying the many fruits of the Spirit.

Yet this transformation isn’t automatic. Only those who are “trained by it” reap the full benefit. When we embrace God’s discipline with an open heart, trusting His purpose, we invite His work to shape us. So, when trials come – lean into them. See them as a sign of God’s love and care, not as punishment. In the end you’ll find yourself stronger, wiser, and at peace, standing in the fullness of His love and purpose for your life.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me to accept your discipline as a gift, even when it’s hard. Give me the strength to endure, trusting that you’re working in me to bring about a harvest of righteousness and peace. Amen.
