At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.” – Luke 22:66-71
Luke paints the dramatic scene: Standing before the council of elders, the chief priests, and teachers of the law, Jesus is being interrogated. These religious leaders, who had followed His ministry and witnessed countless signs, still questioned His identity. When Jesus affirmed that He is the Son of God, they exclaimed, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips” (Luke 22:71).
What’s striking is how they unwittingly acknowledged the truth. For three years, they saw miracles, heard His teaching, and witnessed the fulfillment of prophecies. But rather than letting their hearts be transformed, they held tightly to their pride, their traditions, and their sense of control. They didn’t need more signs or miracles. They needed a relationship with the One who they were about to put to death.
This struggle is not just their story; it’s ours too. How often do we, as modern Christians, seek more proof or clearer answers when what we really need is to trust the truth we already know? We might find ourselves clinging to our own sense of control, our rules, and even our self-righteousness. Yet, all the evidence in the world won’t change a heart that refuses to let go of its own pride.
Jesus’ invitation to the religious leaders then is the same to us now: lay down your striving, surrender your pride, and embrace the fullness of life that He offers. We don’t need proof… it’s about softening our hearts to the truth that is already before us.
