“God chooses the humble, the lowly, the meek, and the weak so that there’s never any question about the source of power when their lives change the world. It’s not the man; it’s the truth of God and the power of God in the man.” – John MacArthur, Twelve Ordinary Men

When Jesus chose his disciples, he didn’t turn to the religious elites or the respected scholars of his time. He didn’t seek out rabbis, scribes, or Pharisees – those who had influence and knowledge. Instead, he chose fishermen, a tax collector, and everyday working-class men who were otherwise undistinguishable. The religious establishment would have looked down on these men, but Jesus saw something different.

Jesus choosing these twelve was more than just a decision: it was a statement. It was a message that God’s work wouldn’t be accomplished through status, tradition, or human effort. It was a reminder that God’s power shows up most vividly through those the world often overlooks. It’s a call to remember that God doesn’t measure us by our achievements or social standing. Instead, He looks for the humble heart that’s willing to learn and be molded.

The disciples were far from perfect. They doubted, stumbled, and misunderstood Jesus at times. But they were teachable. They had the humility to follow, to be shaped by Jesus’ words and example. And in their obedience, God’s power transformed them into world-changers! – a powerful reminder that God’s strength shines brightest in our weaknesses.

So if you feel ordinary or unqualified, remember that God’s not looking for perfect people. He’s looking for those who are willing to trust Him, to be taught by Him, and to allow His strength to work through their lives. He chooses the humble so that when the world sees the change, there’s no mistaking where the power comes from – it’s from God alone.
