My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
– James 5:19-20
It’s not uncommon for people to drift from the truth. Sometimes it happens because of the struggles they face, the temptations that lure them, or simply the weariness of life itself. As Christ followers, we’re called to do more than just notice when someone strays – we’re called to take action. James reminds us of this responsibility: if someone you know wanders from the faith, don’t just sit back and watch. Pursue them, love them, and help bring them back to Christ.
It’s easy to feel like it’s not our place to interfere in someone else’s life. Maybe we think they should know better, or that they’ll find their way back eventually. But God doesn’t want us to give up on each other! He wants us to care enough to step in when needed. This doesn’t mean we come armed with judgment or condemnation. Rather, we come with grace, understanding, and a desire to see them fully restored.
When we bring someone back to the truth, we’re participating in something eternal! We help steer them away from the cliff of spiritual destruction and guide them back to a restored fellowship with God. It’s an act of love, both for the person and for Christ.
Is there someone you know who’s wandered from the truth? Maybe God is calling you to reach out. Don’t give up on them, don’t assume they’ll make their way back on their own. If you’re unsure of how to best go about approaching that person, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your conversation with gentleness and love. Pray for them, be patient, and when the time is right, help lead them back to the grace and love that Christ offers.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank you for never giving up on me, even when I’ve wandered. Help me to love others with that same kind of patience and care. Give me the wisdom to know how to reach out to those who’ve strayed, and the grace to bring them back to you. Amen.
