Remember me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people. – Neh. 5:19
Nehemiah faced an overwhelming task. The walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins, and his people were suffering under oppression and injustice. His mission was more than just a construction project; it was about restoring lives. In the midst of his hard work, Nehemiah paused to ask God to remember what he had done for his people.
His example serves as a reminder to us that as we go about doing God’s work, it’s more than just the projects or tasks we complete. Nehemiah shows us that the heart of the work is in serving others with compassion. He knew his efforts would mean little without caring for those most in need.
We can easily get so caught up in the busyness of life that we completely forget that God’s desire is for us to show love and compassion in everything we do. Whether it’s ministry, at our jobs, or in our daily interactions, if we forget the people we are serving, our efforts lose their true meaning.
Take a moment today to reflect. Are you building walls or building lives? Are you seeking God’s approval by loving those around you, especially those who are overlooked and struggling? Nehemiah trusted that God saw not only the effort, but also the heart behind the work. Let us strive each day to serve with that same love and purpose.
