“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” – John 6:9
When the crowd of 5000 came, the disciples saw a major problem. They needed an army of caterers, not a small basket of bread and fish. The situation seemed hopeless. What on earth could they do with this young boy’s lunch? But Jesus didn’t dismiss the meager offering as insignificant. Instead, he took the small provision given to him and asked his Father in Heaven to bless it accordingly. Jesus acted in complete faith, and God responded with overwhelming abundance and grace. There was so much food left over that the disciples could eat for a week!
How often it is that our human nature prompts us to seek earthly solutions to our problems too, no matter how big or small. Despite the overwhelming evidence of our past that God will meet our every need, we just have the most difficult time putting our complete trust in Him!
Also, when we rely on our own understanding and resources, we miss out on the awesome opportunity to invite God into our situation. And when we fail to seek His intervention, we don’t get the wonderful opportunity to witness His power and the ability to glorify Him for meeting our needs. And not just our big needs, but our little needs too! Jesus cares about our daily bread just as much as our most pressing troubles. His compassion extends to every aspect of our lives, revealing that He is intimately invested in our wellbeing. There is no need too great nor too trivial for him!
Friend, God can take our little faith – like the little boy’s small lunch – and turn it into something extraordinary. We simply need the willingness to trust and rely on Him. When we do, we open the door for Him to do great things in our lives.
