A Thirst Forever Quenched

Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” – John 4:28-29

Something remarkable happens when Jesus enters a person’s heart and they become filled with the Holy Spirit.

Their attitudes gradually begin to change. What used to be constant feelings of loneliness, hopelessness and discontentment are replaced with a profound sense of security, optimism and peace. They also receive spiritual clarity about things that once remained hidden to them. As their eyes continue to open to the truth of who Jesus is, they begin to see people and circumstances through a different lens.

They also begin to move away from the worldly things that they used to crave and enjoy – things that separated them from God – and start moving closer to those things that draw them nearer to Him. The things they read, the shows they watch on television, the music they listen to, and the company they keep are now being filtered through God’s holy word. The Spirit convicts them when they occasionally feel tempted to give into those old desires, and Scripture directs them how to respond in obedience to Him.

The Samaritan woman desperately needed Living Water, but she had no idea how thirsty she was for it. But when she asked for it, it was given to her. And in her rush to tell everyone else how wonderful it tasted, she left her jar behind. She no longer needed it.

“Come see a man who told me everything I ever did!” she said to the people in her village. What she was really saying was, “Come see a man who has given me everything I could ever want.”

How about you? Do you know this man, Jesus? Has he revealed Himself to you in such a way that it causes you to leave behind everything you once craved to follow Him?
