“I have discovered this principle of life – that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.” – Romans 7:21-23
We can all identify with Paul’s struggle. We want to do what is right and good, but we often end up going right back to our old destructive ways. This spiritual battle that Paul describes is part of being human. Our human nature is at war with Godly living. So how do we overcome this battle? Unfortunately we can’t, not on our own. We simply don’t have the power to change ourselves. But there’s some Good News!
“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.” – John 14:15-17a
Walking in step with the Spirit is not just a decision, but a lifestyle. It is an intentional choice to surrender our will and desires to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit, who dwells in every believer, is our divine Helper, Teacher, and Comforter.
When we walk in step with the Spirit, we align ourselves with God’s purposes and plans. The Spirit gently nudges us in the right direction, whispering truth and wisdom into our hearts. He reminds us of God’s character, revealing His love, grace, and faithfulness.
Walking in step with the Spirit allows us to experience the transformative power of God’s Word. As we meditate on Scripture, the Spirit illuminates its truths, helping us understand and apply them to our lives. He brings to mind specific verses or passages, giving us guidance and encouragement in various situations.
The Spirit helps us to emulate Christ’s life and character. He brings to our remembrance the example set by Jesus, teaching us how to respond with patience, humility, and compassion. When faced with challenges, the Spirit provides us with the supernatural ability to exercise self-control, forgiveness, and love, even when it seems difficult.
Walking in step with the Spirit is an ongoing journey. It requires us to be sensitive and responsive to His leading, to seek His guidance in prayer, and to cultivate a heart that is willing to obey. As we yield to the Spirit’s promptings, we can experience the abundant life that Jesus promised – a life filled with joy, peace, and the fulness of God’s presence.
So, let us commit ourselves to daily yielding to the Holy Spirit, relying on His power and wisdom. As we walk in step with Him, He will transform us from the inside out, enabling us to live a life that brings honor and glory to God. Amen.
