A Jealous God

“God will put up with a great many things in the human heart. But there is one thing He will not put up with in it – a second place. He who offers God a second place, offers Him no place.” – John Ruskin

In one of his sermons dated back in March of 1863, the great English preacher, Charles Spurgeon, once said: “The whole history of the human race is a record of the wars of the Lord against idolatry.” All 4000 years of that history is recorded in the Holy Bible.

Today, there isn’t a single occurrence of idolatry being committed by humans that wasn’t first recorded in God’s Word. If it is being worshipped today, it was being worshipped back then. And if God was jealous back then, so jealous that He punished the Israelites over and over as the Bible attests, then that means He’s jealous today, too. God never changes.

And unfortunately we humans don’t easily change neither. While that should give us tremendous pause, unfortunately it doesn’t. We simply cannot seem to avoid putting things before God, despite the dire consequences awaiting us.

But please, take heed. God will not be mocked; He is not One to defer.

  • He is exceedingly jealous of His Deity. Only He is holy.
  • He is jealous of His Sovereignty. Only He has all power to rule.
  • He is jealous of His Glory. He won’t share praise, it all belongs to Him.
  • He is jealous over His own people. He created us. He owns us.

Loved ones, let us keep this in mind as we go about our day today. A gust of wind occurs not unless God wills it so. The sun rises and sets on His command alone; nothing happens without God’s permission and provision. Not even the billions of stars in the night sky will twinkle without first seeking direction from Him. He is the Creator of the Universe, its Sovereign Keeper.

Who are we, but creation of a Jealous God?
