We Are Tools in the Hand of God

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

Samuel Brengle, who was an early Salvation Army official, was once introduced as the, “Great Dr. Brengle.” He later wrote in his diary, “If I appear great in their eyes, the Lord is most graciously helping me to see how absolutely nothing I am without Him, and helping me to keep little in my own eyes. He does use me. But I am so concerned that He uses me and that it is not of me the work is done. The axe cannot boast of the trees it has cut down. It could do nothing but for the woodsman. He made it, he sharpened it, and he used it. The moment he throws it aside, it becomes only old iron. O, that I may never lose sight of this.”

God’s love is transforming. It meets us where we are, but upon receiving His love, He sets us on the path we should be going. This love of His that saves our souls also changes our lives.

Long before we were ever created, His works for us were planned. The work God prepared for us is good, and framed with the Spirit of kindness, generosity, service, and love for others. By following His plan and carrying out these good works, we bring Him glory and honor, fulfilling our purpose as His children.

May we take a moment today to reflect on the quality of our work; that it is being done not in vain nor haste, but in cheerfulness and love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
