“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts who you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.” William Shakespeare
Jonathan and David were the closest of friends, despite the fact that they were from different families and had different destinies. They made a covenant between them based on their love for each other and for God. Jonathan confirmed this promise of loyalty by making David swear an oath, appealing to God’s judgment to come upon David’s enemies.
“So Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, saying, “May the Lord destroy all your enemies!” And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.” – 1 Samuel 20:16-17
This passage reminds us of the importance of having true friends in our lives; those who we can confide in, who will encourage us, and who will stay by our side no matter what. We all need people who will support us in our journey and remind us of our purpose when we stray from our path.
Moreover, this passage also reminds us of God’s faithfulness in our lives. Just as Jonathan and David made a covenant that they would keep, God has made a covenant with us through Jesus Christ. This covenant assures us of His everlasting love, grace, and salvation.
This morning, let us reflect on the friendships in our own lives and give thanks for those who stand by us through good times and the bad. Let us also be reminded of God’s covenant with us and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that guarantees our salvation. May we show our love for God and others by keeping our own promises and being faithful to the end.
Today’s Action Step:
Take time today to reach out to a close friend that you’ve not connected with recently and let them know you’re thinking about them. It will make them feel appreciated, and it will make you feel good, too.
