Look No Further

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.” – Matthew 13:44

“I have climbed highest mountains, I have run through the fields, only to be with you; only to be with you. I have run, I have crawled, I have scaled these city walls, these city walls, only to be with you; only to be with you.”

When U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’ album debuted in 1987, I played it so many times on my stereo walkman that the cassette wore out within a year. I was a senior in high school and I was desperately searching for many things: freedom, love, acceptance, happiness, and excitement, just to name a few. But more than anything, I was curious about the next phase of my life that was then upon me; early adulthood.

Although the album is still one of my all-time favorites, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” is the anthem song from my youth. I could relate so, so much to the restless spirit that this song conveyed to me at that time in my life. And every time I read this parable Jesus tells in Matthew 13, I can’t help but remember this song!

As I read this parable, I’m reminded that the Kingdom of Heaven is so precious, so valuable, and so worth having that I should be willing to do anything to obtain it. Just like the man in this parable, I should be willing to sell everything I have in order to have eternal life in Christ.

As we begin this new day, we should ask ourselves the following question: How much value do I place on what Christ accomplished on the cross at Calvary? Do I recognize the incredible worth of salvation and eternal life? Do I treasure it so much that I’m willing to climb the highest mountains, run through the longest fields, scale the tallest city walls? Am I willing to give up anything and everything for it?

Today, let us remember that nothing in this world can compare to the treasure of knowing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. When we surrender everything to Him, we gain everything that truly matters. May the Lord help us to keep our hearts set on His Kingdom and to be willing to do whatever He asks of us.

It is in Him that we find everything we’re looking for.
