Winning with Grace

“How beloved and gracious were Saul and Jonathan! They were together in life and in death. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.” – 2 Samuel 1:23

Imagine giving the eulogy of someone who on numerous occasions in the past tried to have you killed.

This is essentially what David did in 2 Samuel 1:23.

Upon hearing the deaths of King Saul and Jonathan (his son), David took a moment to share some thoughts. The tenor with which he spoke was with both great respect and honor. He recognized the positive qualities that both Saul and Jonathan possessed, namely their speed, strength, and closeness to one another.

David’s words should speak to us, too.

What might occur should we make every attempt to find common ground with those who may see us as enemies? David easily could’ve taken advantage of Saul’s death to speak poorly of him and celebrate his demise, but instead he chose to focus on the good qualities that he admired about Saul. As we navigate our own relationships and interactions with others, do we speak and act with grace? Or do we focus on the things that divide us? Take a look around the world today. How well are we doing when it comes to managing our differences?

David’s remarks also speaks to the powerful bond that existed between he and Jonathan. Despite coming from different backgrounds and expected to be enemies, they formed a brotherly friendship and looked out for each other throughout their lives. What a testimony this is to the importance of building relationships with others, even when it seems challenging or unlikely.

As we continue to interact with others, may we be reminded of the value in finding common ground, respecting those who don’t always agree with us or may have even wronged us, and building those meaningful relationships with those around us.

David’s example of humility and honor is one we should strive for today, as we try to shine our light of love and compassion upon others.
