“Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.” – John 12:44-45
One was named Joe, the other was Mike. They often wore the same clothes, they had the same voice, displayed the same mannerisms, and shared the same birthday. And one of them was always getting blamed for the other’s trouble. Yet there was a secret identifier to help determine who was who that few of their fellow students knew about.
Despite being identical twins, Mike was allergic to peanuts.
I often thought about how cool it would’ve been to have had an identical twin brother growing up. I struggled with science in school, but my brother excelled in it. He wasn’t fond of history, but it was my favorite subject. Between us, we easily could’ve been honor students! But alas… individually we were little better than average.
As I read Jesus’ words in John 12:44-45 this evening, I thought about my childhood friends, Joe and Mike. I couldn’t tell them apart. When I looked at one of them, I was essentially looking at the other, too.
Have you ever wondered what God is like? How can we possibly know our Creator when He doesn’t make Himself visible to us?
Jesus provides the answer to this age-old question in one sentence: “The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.”
There’s your answer. If you want to know who God is, all you have to do is study the character and words of Jesus in the Bible. If you know Jesus, you know God. If you believe in Jesus, you believe in God.
There is no mistaking His Identity.
