“… as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs”. ~ Step 12, AA
“Don’t leave before the miracle happens.”
I heard this early on in recovery and pondered the meaning. What was this miracle that some people kept talking about? I assumed that perhaps a light would come on in my brain and someday and I’d be able to drink like a normal person again.
But that wasn’t what it meant. The miracle would be something so much more……
Miraculous.
It turns out that God had something even greater in mind.
When my life was at the very bottom and I asked God for help, He responded. He surrounded me with people who would help me get sober, and then he surrounded me with more people who help me stay sober. I’ve not had the urge to drink for years now.
My life today is really good. It is truly better than I deserve. When I think back on who I was and all the rotten things I did back during my active alcoholism, I cannot help but ask God, “Why me? Why have you blessed me the way you have, Lord? You know better than anyone what I truly deserve. Yet you’ve not only helped me reclaim a life that I’d carelessly thrown away, but given me a life beyond my wildest dreams! Why me?”
Because that’s who God is. That’s what grace is all about. He doesn’t give based on who I am or what I’ve done. He gives based on who He is.
So one day at a time, I continue the good fight. I continue praying and trying my best to do His will, and He continues giving me this life that just blows me away.
And here’s the deal. Maybe you’re reading this and the demon you’re fighting isn’t alcohol or drugs, but perhaps something else. Maybe you feel like I did, like giving up. Well, I would encourage you to do just that. Give whatever you’re fighting up and turn it over to God. Pray to Him often. Ask for His help. Allow the Holy Spirit to work through you to guide your ways. And when you screw up, tell Him about it right away. Repent. And then keep reading His Word and doing your best.
And then, be ready to share with others how your miracle happened.
