The Battle Within

“Whether you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” ~ Isaiah 30:21

When the Israelites strayed from God’s righteous path, He would correct them. Perhaps it would take years, maybe even decades, for this correction to finally occur, but that says as much about God’s merciful patience as it does man’s sinful and rebellious nature.

A pastor who I occasionally listen to says that man hears three voices in his mind, but often doesn’t pay much attention to one of them; 1) the voice that tells him who he himself believes he is; 2) the voice that tells him who others believe he is; 3) the voice that tells him who he really is (God).

I don’t think I need to tell you which of these voices that man tends to ignore….

A grandmother was spending time with her grandson one afternoon. As they were talking, the topic of character came up, and how some people can be really mean spirited.

The boy’s grandmother seized the opportunity to educate her grandson about a battle that is waged inside every human being.

“Son, inside every person there is a terrible battle going on between two wolves; One is evil, angry, selfish, deceitful, jealous, prideful, and full of shame and regret. The other wolf is peaceful, loving, kind, joyful, humble, forgiving, patient, honest, and faithful.”

The boy thought for a moment and asked a simple question.

“Grandma, which one wins?”

The boy’s grandmother smiled, as she had been asked the simple question she wanted him to ask. And she responded to his question with a simple but profound answer:

“The one you feed.”

We are consumed by what we consume. So… what are we feasting on today? Are we consuming things that help boost our spiritual immunity, enabling us to fend off the problems and temptations of man’s rebellious nature?

Or are we satisfying our palates with big helpings of evil, anger, pride, and selfish desires that the world’s all-you-can-eat buffet offers?

You are free to choose your meal plan. God gives us the choice, every day. Which wolf do you choose to feed?
