“My grace is sufficient for you,” says the Lord. “For my power is made perfect in weakness.” ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9
The slice: It is the bane of most every recreational golfer, his Achilles heel. If he is truly bitten by the golf bug, he will desire to learn how to hit the ball straighter. Which means, in a roundabout way, that he will figure out a technique or an adjustment in his swing that will encourage the ball to fly in a completely opposite direction, and then gradually try to find that foreign place that unfortunately doesn’t exist for most of us – straight down the middle.
This may, for a short period, resolve his quandary. But eventually what most always ends up happening is that the golfer will have nary a clue as to where the ball is going to end up.
“At least when I sliced the ball,” he will lament later on, “I knew where the ball was going. I knew where my ‘miss’ (mistake) would end up. Now I have no idea!”
Much like our golf swings on the course, most of us are aware that we also have many weak tendencies as it relates to everyday living of life. The Apostle Paul likewise had his weaknesses. He was far from perfect; he had his moments, too. But he also realized that God could use his weakness for His glory… that even in his weakest state – God could be powerfully glorified.
Growth doesn’t occur without struggle, friend. Although God doesn’t want us to perfect our weaknesses as that of a struggling golfer who perpetually slices the golf ball, He can use our current limitations to teach us something important, even amidst our ‘misses’ that land us in the deepest of roughs.
While there is indeed little power in a deficient golf swing on the golf course, His power is made perfect through even our weakness.
