Backyards and Ruby Slippers

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” ~ 1 Timothy, 6: 6-7

The search for happiness is endless. The problem with finding happiness, however, is that we look for it in all the wrong places. And even when we do finally find some measure of happiness, we become frustrated to learn shortly thereafter that it wasn’t exactly what we thought it would be.

Our search for it brings us to a plethora of what at first appear to be wonderful ideas; a renewed focus at our jobs and promotions, gym membership, new golf equipment, shopping malls, weight-loss programs, food, alcohol, drugs, and even church… the list goes on.

Our hearts remain restless, however. After many years of day-after-day boredom and frustration that mysteriously turn into significant portions of our history, we become desperate. “There has to be more to this life than this.”

Without even realizing it, we are moving closer and closer to God.

As the curtain closes on another year, I’m reminded of the words of a young teenage girl named Dorothy Gale.

“Well, I … I think that it… that it wasn’t enough to just want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em … and it’s that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard; because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”

May your heart find what it longs for in 2022… an inseparable closeness with your loving Creator, Who meets your every need, Who offers you the things that this life promises but always fails to deliver.

Peace.

Happiness.

Love.

Happy New Years!
