“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ.” 1 Thessalonians, 5:16

I knew a guy who seemed to know all the right words that needed to be said, and knew precisely when to say them. He was eager to encourage others who were going through difficult situations in life; always reminding them to never give up and to trust that things were going to work out in the end. But as pleasantly optimistic and encouraging toward others he was, he struggled greatly using that same positive outlook when viewing his own circumstances.
That guy was me.
Friend, it is always easier to talk the talk than to walk the talk. When life is going according to plan, trusting God isn’t difficult. The smallest things can bring a smile to our faces, like the sound of laughter from a small child or the most simple act of kindness from another person. Those little moments when our sense of appreciation overcomes us and fills our hearts with joy and thanksgiving are precious gifts from our Heavenly Father.
But how quickly we tend to lose that sense of peace and joy when life suddenly starts going a little sideways on us.
As an alcoholic who God rescued from the bottom of the pit of hopelessness, I’m reminded each and every morning I wake up precisely why I should rejoice, make time to pray, and express genuine gratitude for the life I have by being helpful toward others. This is ultimately God’s will for my life today, for me to stay sober so I can remain useful for Him.
And not only those days when all is right in my world, not only those moments when being thankful and kind doesn’t cause me major inconveniences; but under all situations, circumstances, and seasons.
God calls us to be joyful, prayerful, and grateful, no matter what.
Today’s meditation: Lord, you are my strength and salvation. You rescued me from a life of hopelessness and shame, and restored my sanity. Everything I have today is all because of your mercy and grace, God. May I continue to pursue your will for my life, for you and your glory alone. Amen.
